Online blurb:
SHE KNOWS BETTER THAN TO SAY “I DO”

After a humiliating end to her engagement, investment banker Sidney Sinclair is done with commitment-phobic men. But when her sister winds up engaged after a whirlwind courtship, Sidney is thrown into close contact with exactly the kind of sexy playboy she wants to avoid—the gorgeous best man. She’s stuck with him, for better or worse, until her sister walks down the aisle, but that doesn’t mean she has to give in to his smooth advances, no matter how tempting they are…

BUT HE MAKES IT HARD TO SAY “I DON’T”

Special agent Vaughn Roberts always gets his man on the job and his woman in bed. So Sidney’s refusal to fall for his charms only makes him more determined to win over the cool and confident redhead. Only what starts out as a battle of wills ends up as a serious play for her heart. Because the one woman who refuses to be caught may be the only one Vaughn can’t live without…

My opinion:
Sidney Sinclair spent eight years in New York as a successful investment banker and just returned to her hometown of Chicago to become the director of a private equity firm. Successful in her professional life, she’s decided she needs a plan for dating. Surely six months is enough time to get over her broken engagement and her scummy ex-fiance. Armed with her long list of warning signs about men and the instincts she’d developed about companies, she’s now set out to find a suitable man.

FBI Special Agent Vaughn Roberts loves his life of undercover work and disposable women and sees no reason he should change it. He’s not out for a relationship, after all. He’s happy with his work and his life as they are.

Sidney and Vaughn accidentally meet up when Vaughn hits on her and is rejected but then they discover they aren’t meant to remain strangers when Vaughn’s brother and Sidney’s sister announce they are getting married and want Sidney and Vaughn in the wedding. Sidney then gets roped into helping the bride conceal a secret from her prospective in-laws – and Vaughn – and Vaughn uses his FBI trained observation skills to figure out what’s going on anyway.

Despite Sidney and Vaughn deciding they are not right for each other, there’s no denying the hot attraction between them and when wedding plans and secrets push them closer and closer, combustion is inevitable.

It Happened One Wedding is the latest installment in Julie James’ FBI / US Attorney Series and stars FBI Special Agent Vaughn Roberts, who we’ve met in a prior book as Cade Morgan’s best friend. Unlike prior books in this series, this book does not feature a US Attorney and does not revolve around a light suspense plot starring the two main characters. It Happened One Wedding is more of a traditional romance than even a light romantic suspense, in my opinion. I would have preferred to keep the light suspense factors of the prior books in this series.

It Happened One Wedding was an enjoyable read with a strong heroine and a sexy hero. I liked the heroine’s sass and bit of snark and really enjoyed some of the hero’s mental dialogue and his almost hurt feelings when the other main characters tried to hide the secret from him. The characters are lively and likeable. I did wish for the suspense angle from prior books in the series, though.
